Potter Mitts!

Potter Mitts

I used Regia Nations yarn in the appropriate colorways to make Ravenclaw and Gryffindor mitts for my sister and me, respectively. Also started a pair in one of the self-striping Regia yarns and they're coming out quite well!

The body of the mitt is in a k2p2 ribbing, and the thumb gusset and thumb is done in a k1p1 rib. Quick and easy and fun!

This is my second pattern (after the Weasley Twin Hat), so if there are goofs or confusing bits please let me know!

Materials:
1 ball of Regia Nations yarn (in house colours, of course!)
1 set of size 1 double pointed needles, or size needed for gauge
2 stitch markers (or three, if you you want to make the start of round)
1 yarn needle

Gauge:
7 sts = 1" on US size needle 1

Size:
Fits small to medium-ish ladies' hands.

Directions:
Cast on 60 stitches.
*Note: when I cast on, I used a long-tail cast-on with the slip knot at a color junction, which created a very thin border of contrast. Not necessary in the slightest, but I like the effect.

Divide evenly onto dpns, careful not to twist.
Place marker for start of round (if desired)

Work in k2 p2 rib for four color repeats (or to desired length).

Begin thumb gusset:
k2, p1, place marker, p1, k1, m1 (purl), k1, p1, place marker (5 stitches between markers)
k2, p1, slip marker, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, slip marker, p1, k2p2 to end of round.
k2, p1, slip marker, m1 (knit), p1k1 to 1 before marker, p1, m1 (knit), slip marker, p1, k2p2 to end of round. (7 st between markers)
k2, p1, slip marker, k1p1 to 1 before marker, k1, slip marker, p1, k2p2 to end of round.
k2, p1, slip marker, m1 (purl), k1p1 to 1 before marker, k1, m1 (purl), slip marker, p1, k2p2 to end of round. (9 st)
k2, p1, slip marker, p1k1 to 1 before marker, p1, slip marker, p1, k2p2 to end of round

Repeat rows 3 though 6 until you have 21 stitches between the markers. (If you have larger hands, you can continue a few more rounds and stop with 23 or 25 gusset stitches.)

Next row, k2 p1. Place the 21 stitches on waste yarn. p1, k2p2 around.

k2p2 until there are a total of 7 color repeats (should be slightly less than 2 more from the point you place the gusset stitches on the holder.

Cast off.
*Note: As with the cast-on, I cast off just after hitting the contrasting color change which results in a thin band of contrast. Again, not necessary, I just like it.

Thumb:
Transfer the 21 stitches onto 3 dpn's. Pick up three additional stitches across gap. (knit, purl, knit.)
Knit 7 rounds in k1p1 rib as established and bind off loosely in pattern.

Weave in ends.

Repeat for second mitt -- mitts are reversible/interchangeable, left and right are knit identically.

I have pretty large women's hands (or the equiv. of small-med men's) - how many stitches do you think I will need?
